Houston Assembly of Delphian Chapters

HOUSTON ASSEMBLY OF DELPHIAN CHAPTERS

Not what we have but what we share, for ceasing to share we cease to have

So who are the Delphians?

A lively discussion in a Chapter on an historical topic… a promising student receiving a full scholarship … a Chapter having a holiday luncheon …a style show.. ..a group jaunt to an Arabian horse exhibition..

That’s one side of the Delphians. Then there’s the official side:

”The Houston Assembly of Delphian Chapter or  the Delphians is an organization for women dedicated to intellectual enrichment, social enhancement, and philanthropic endeavors.”

Dephians is all of this and more.

The Delphians Speak

“The thing I like about the Delphian Chapter meetings is that there’s no homework – I don’t have to prepare anything. And if I have to miss a meeting because of business travel then it’s okay. I like to think I”m conscientious about what I take on and want to give it my all and with Delphians I feel comfortable being a member. It easily works into my schedule.

“I like the discussions in the Chapter meetings because the other members are so open to learning new things and I like that. The fact that I can learn along with others is a great bonus.”

“I think Delphians and particularly the Chapter meetings and the Seminars provide intellectual and cultural opportunities I’ve not found anywhere else.”

What's Involved?

Members of Delphians are first members of their individual Chapters and there are currently ten Houston Chapters that meet in both daytime and evening. It is in the Chapters where you read and share the Seminars which can lead to some fascinating discussions. (See the Seminars section to see the current topics). The conversational interchange of diverse viewpoints in a non-judgmental atmosphere is a Delphian tradition. Beyond the Chapter setting the Delphians conduct field trips, offer social events such as style shows and luncheons, and cultural events such as sponsorship of concerts and drama.

Delphian Scholars and Scholarships

Also, a major part of the Delphians is giving full scholarships to students at the University of Houston and the University of Houston-Downtown. The first Delphian scholarship was awarded in 1930 when UH was a junior college. This Delphian scholarship paid for all tuition, fees and books. Since the first two scholars, the Delphians have given in excess of $1,500,000 in over 500 scholarships and other gifts to the University of Houston community.

Currently there are 12 students receiving Delphian Scholarships at the University of Houston and the University of Houston–Downtown.
